Silk Scarves (Shibori) with Beading

Shibori is a form of Japanese tie-dye. Beautiful, unpredictable and luminous patterns develop on the silk as the colors merge. Pattern silk scarves with dye and permanently fix the colors. Learn to embellish your scarves with beading.

Our fiber artists are offering classes in two types of dyeing processes: Procion and Acid (French) Dying.

Surface Design Sundays
Demonstrations with Michele Montour and Nancy McKay
Explore the winter blahs, grab a friend, have fun and explore the medium of Surface Design, the creative exploration of ways to color, pattern and manipulate fiber and fabric. Experience first-hand a potpourri of 8 techniques, preview Michele Montour and Nancy McKay's winter line-up of classes and get a sneak preview of what's coming to 212 in fiber art in the upcoming monts. Snacks provided. Raffle for scarves created during demo, part of the fee.

Batik-A-Pillow
Instructor: Michele Montour
Learn the Southeast Asian art of batik using environmentally safe soy wax. Using sponges and brushes students will apply melted wax creating resist areas prior to dyeing a 16" x 16" blank pillowcase. During the half-hour dyeing process, embellishment techniques will be discussed. Wax is easily removed with hot water! Pillowcase is 100% silk with zipper. Students should bring paper and pencil for sketching ideas.

Nuno Felted Scarf
Instructor: Michelle Montour
Create a wonderful scarf by felting merino wool to fabric! Students will start with an 18"x72" pre-dyed silk scarf. Wool roving is laid on fabric. Bubble wrap and soapy water create the necessary environment for wool to attach to silk. Felted scarves will be approximately 15"x 66". Make your scarf more unique-bring novelty yarn to embellish your scarf during the felting process. Each student will go home with one scarf. The scarf color choices are olive, plum or dark grey.

Pillow Talk

Pillows are a great way to liven up the look of any room. In this class you will learn how to transform an old sweater into a modern marvel of style. A pillow that is nothing if not HIGH END! And it is also a great way to use up some of your left-over pieces from the sweater bag and mitten classes.

These Mittens Aren't For Kittens

Lost your mittens and don't know where to find them? You can find a brand new pair in an old, but still-loved woolen sweater. In this class you will learn the simple tricks necessary to make yourself (or a really dear pal) a pair of mittens that are just your style. *Bring your own minimum 80% wool sweater. Supply list given upon registration.

Wool Felt Pillow

Create a wonderful and unique accent pillow in wool felt. If you love the pillows in Pottery Barn and Crate & Barrel, this is for you. Create a ruffled wool pillow using a single color of felt to create texture and interest through manipulation of the felt.

Going with the Flow-Discover Silk Painting

The brilliance of French dye colors shimmering over the surface of silk is a wonder to behold. Experience the full range of this medium, utilize the flow of color to create beautiful, watercolor-like patterns, and gain confidence with color. Take home a store of hand-painted fabric for fine art, wearables, or home decor. No drawing or painting experience is needed. Wear old clothes.Age: 14+

Beginning Weaving II-Wonderful Winter Scarf

Start with a skein of yarn, students will learn how to wind a warp, dress a table top loom, weave, and finish a scarf. Length, colors, and patterns to be determined by the student, making each scarf unique. Supply list provided upon registration.

Art Quilt Workshop

Explore the process of making art quilts. You will design your project, and be guided in a variety of techniques. You may choose to do the work by hand or machine. Bring a sketch or picture, notebook, fabric for background of quilt design, scissors and pins to the first class.

"Have You Any Wool (Sweaters)?" Bag

Recycle your over-loved, over-washed, over-worn woolen sweaters. Give your sweater a whole new life as a super hip, super durable, super bag. In this class you will learn to spruce up your woolens both before and after felting, to create a fabulous bag, purse or pouch.

Knit a Felt Bag

Learn to knit a petite purse, or a big haul-it-all, you choose the size and colors. Make it fuzzy and fabulous, or tidy and sophisticated. Learn to make an I-cord edge and handle. Bring at least 2 skeins wool yarn, not washable.

Celebrate every season with a banner of your own design! You may choose holidays, a birthday flag, or crown a Queen or King with your pennant. Use our machine; there is only a bit of sewing. And decorate with hand stitches. Fabric supplied by instructor.

Silk "Bargello" for Wearable Art and Home Decor
Instructor: Nancy McKay
Learn an easy way to paint on silk and reassemble it to look like Bargello tapestry. Learn how to control the silk to simplify cutting and sewing. No prior painting experience needed. Students should be able to sew an accurate ¼" straight seam on cotton. Most students complete a small piece for a purse or pillow in class and take home enough hand-painted fabric for a larger project such as a vest. Student will need to bring own sewing machine, rotary cutting supplies, and thread to the "Part Two" class meeting times.

Going Against the Flow-Discover Silk Screening
Instructor: Nancy McKay
Explore ways to pattern silk that defy the flow of French dyes across the surface while retaining their gorgeous colors. Explore graphic design with naturalistic imagery. Learn to make a simple silk screen with reusable stencils. Print with thickened dyes, water soluble resists, and a few surprise ingredients. Techniques learned in class can be used with other fabrics as well. After steaming, bring back the flow and enjoy.
